The History of Glass

From our earliest origins, humans have used naturally occurring materials. Obsidian, a volcanic glass, was prized for cutting tools. Manufactured glass, however, appears around 3500 BCE in Mesopotamia, where small beads were the first products. Roman glassblowing — invented around the 1st century BCE — transformed glass from a luxury into an everyday material, enabling cups, bottles and, eventually, windows.
